Finally getting to my 50hr service and man are the costs adding up. Think the 3 filters alone were $100 total. Got some gear oil for the front diff. Went to wal-mart to look through their heavy duty diesel oil selection and everything was 15W-40. My owners manual recommends 10w-30. The only 10w-30 I can find is the usual motor oil I put in my car? Which should I use? Or should I just get the cub cadet brand oil?
Thanks,
Ed

I don't think you can harm your engine by using a slightly different grade of oil. I just bought Shell Rotella Synthetic for my first oil change in the 15w-40 weight you found at Wally world, even though Kubota calls for a 10w-30 or a 10w-40.
If you decide to stick with a 10w-30 just read the owners manual and the label on the oil bottle. There should be a recommendation from the manufacturer for a CD, CE or CF rated oil. If those letters appear on the oil packaging you should be safe in using it.

For Maine's winter I would recommend that you hold out and find that 10w30 unless you have a nice warm garage and don't leave it out. ....

I might go for the Synthetic Rotella 5W-40 CH-4 oil. I can get it at 12$ a gallon here at Wally World. ....

I admire this board rarely write, but read it all the time.
Your dealer should have the 10w30 oil I have use it in my 27 hp cub for the last 4 years. I use my tractor commercialy in Maine and it starts like a champ on the stuff in cold weather. I have tried to buy oil from napa etc but it costs about the same. I know what you mean about the filter prices air, transmision etc. I buy my eng oil filters from napa. ....

I think the 'mysteries' is going to be my theme for the day. I've always heard that tractors start easier if they're kept out of the wind, but I've never thought why. You'd think that the wind would be the same temperature as an unheated shed and at best a tractor wouldn't cool down from daytime temperatures as fast.

However, I guess I am aware that there is geothermal heat even from frozen ground and sometimes insulation board is buried around even post and skirt foundation sheds to keep them warmer. Don't know if geothermal heat is the answer though.

Tom;
Wind chill is wind chill, whether you are a human or a tractor.
Air molecule impacts will pull the heat out of a piece of metal as well as human flesh. At least up until the point that the friction makes it heat up like the Blackbird SR-71. ....

I was wrong about the weight of the Rotella synthetic. As Peters stated it is a 5w-40, not a 15w-40 as I thought. That makes it even better as an all season oil.

I asked this question before: has anyone encountered an oil with a higher service rating than this synthetic? Right now it looks like the best diesel oil on the market.

Peters, is there any downside to using this oil in gasoline engines? My sense is that if anything, diesel oils would be over-engineered for gasoline engines. ....

I guess I had the notion of a tractor sitting around for days and it's going to be close to the air temperature-- wind or not. A tractor at the same temperature as the wind isn't going to cool down any more. I think wind just decreases the time it takes for temperatures to equalize.

I think that in the back of my mind I'm designing the shed I have to build eventually. I'm curious if geothermal heat is a big enough issue to go to the trouble of placing insulation board in the ground around the perimeter and maybe even insulating the walls of a shed that isn't going to be heated.

Right now I get by with a 14' x 25' arctic shelter tent. Yes it does seem noticeably warmer inside on cold days, but I don't know if that's geothermal heat or if it's just because I'm out of the wind.

I'll be interested to hear comments about whether diesel rated oil works in gas engines.
